Article 25 Tidal Wetlands |
| Project is Located: | Brooklyn, Kings County | |
Project Description: The applicant proposes to construct a natural system border consisting of approximately 2.7 acres of tidal wetlands, .25 acres maritime shrubland, and .7 acres forest along the west and south sides of tidal creek at Four Sparrow Marsh, Brooklyn. The proposed construction will involve exotic invasive species eradication, establishment of native plant communities, fill removal, and deposition of clean sand. It will provide much needed nesting habitat for four species of sparrow, especially the sharptailed and seaside sparrows which are restricted to coastal marshes and declining in population. The expanded habitat will also provide excellent foraging area for numerous wading birds, including great egret, snowy egret and great blue heron. Ribbed mussels, fiddler crabs, killifish, and other species endemic to salt marshes will benefit from the proposed project. The project site is located in Four Sparrow Marsh in Kings County. It is bounded by Flatbush Avenue, Belt Parkway, Mill Basin and adjacent to Floyd Bennett Field. |
