Location: Lands of New York State - Blue Mt. Wild Forest

Comments Due: October 26, 2000

Project description: The project consists of the relocation of approximately ˝ mile of recreational/snowmobile trail on the south and north sides of the Cedar River to connect the northerly terminus of Benton Road with the Blue Mt. Wild Forest and the existing Rock Lake Trail. Traditionally, snowmobilers and other trail users have crossed the Cedar River in this area only seasonally across the frozen river. The NYSDEC now proposes construction of a 107 foot long bridge across the Cedar River to provide year round access to the trail. The bridge, to be located approximately 1,500 feet west of Benton Road, does not involve wetlands and is not subject to Agency review jurisdiction; it was previously approved as an element of the Blue Mountain Wild Forest Unit Management Plan. The new trail sections will run along the southerly and northerly shoreline of the river and will involve wetlands in two locations. These wetlands will be spanned by wooden bridges and will not be filled or graded. A third area of wetland will be involved in the construction of a temporary access road on the south side of the river which is necessary to facilitate the construction of the Cedar River bridge. Approximately 1,000 to 2,000 square feet portion of this wet meadow and scrub/shrub wetland will be filled temporarily, then the fill removed and the area restored. The project is located in an area of State-owned lands classified as “Wild Forest.”

Negative Declaration

Hamilton County - The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, as lead agency, has determined that the proposed Amendment of Blue Mountain Wild Forest Unit Management Plan will not have a significant adverse environmental impact. The action involves an amendment to the unit management plan for the Blue Mountain Wild Forest to relocate a segment of an existing multiple-use recreational trail to connect with a bridge to be constructed over the Cedar River. This will require the removal of 33 trees on one tenth of an acre. The project is located in the town of Indian Lake. A segment of the Cedar River Trail will be relocated to connect with a bridge to be constructed over the Cedar River near the end of Benton Road near the hamlet of Indian Lake.
