|Notice of Acceptance of Final EIS|
Jefferson County - The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, as lead agency has accepted a Final Environmental Impact Statement on the proposed Management of Double-crested Cormorants in U.S. Waters of the Eastern Basin of Lake Ontario. The action is a proposal to reduce the Double-crested Cormorant population in U.S. waters of the eastern basin of Lake Ontario to levels equivalent to 1,500 nesting pairs by 2004, through nest suppression activities. Culling of adults, in addition to nest suppression, will be implemented if population monitoring efforts indicate that nest suppression alone is inadequate to achieve the target level. Prior to implementation of a culling program, an experimental lethal removal of not more than 300 adults will be conducted to establish procedures for efficient, low intrusion removal. Nest suppression and lethal removal activities are each contingent on approval of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The project is located on Little Galloo Island in the eastern basin of Lake Ontario, Town of Hounsfield, Jefferson County, New York.
