DEC Announces Free Pollution Prevention Workshops Designed for Metal Finishers

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will conduct four free pollution prevention workshops across the state for the metal finishers industry sector, according to Mary Werner, Acting Director of DEC's Pollution Prevention Unit.

These workshops are designed to provide compliance guidance and technical assistance to metal finishers. The workshops, supported by a grant received from the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency, are open to industry representatives, consultants, municipal employees or anyone who would like to benefit from this training.

These workshops are part of DEC's growing emphasis on pollution prevention as the most effective and least expensive way to protect our environment," said Werner. "DEC workshops have been very successful at helping industries increase the efficiency and quality of operations through waste reduction and improved environmental compliance."

Workshop participants will receive the following informational materials prepared by the DEC's Pollution Prevention Unit:

  1. Environmental Compliance and Pollution Prevention Guide for Metal Finishers; and
  2. Environmental Self-Assessment for Metal Finishers.

The half-day workshops will be held at the following locations:

Project Description: The department has made a tentative determination to issue a SPDES permit for the discharge of 70,000 gallons per day of treated sanitary waste to the groundwater located at Sound Avenue, Riverhead, New York. The proposed discharge is located with an area designated as a sole source aquifer. Negative Declaration

Nassau County - The State Education Department, as lead agency, has determined that the proposed additions and alterations to the Northedge Pre-K and Kindergarten in the Plainedge Union Free School District, SED Project No. 28-05-18-03-0-009-005, will not have a significant adverse environmental impact. The action involves the demolition of a single story building and approximately 131,513 square feet of new additions on existing property. The project is located at 200 Stewart Avenue in Oyster Bay, New York.

Suffolk County - The Town of Huntington Planning Board, as lead agency has determined that the proposed Delco International Ltd. will not have a significant adverse environmental impact. The action involves construction of a 101,684 square foot industrial building containing 21,596 square feet of office space and 80,088 square feet of warehouse space with required off-street parking (to include 98 landbanked parking stalls), loading and landscaped buffers located on an 9.59 acre (417,894.7 square foot) parcel within an I-2 Light Industry zone district. The subject parcel is within a Town Designated Open Space Index Parcel identified as OSI # SW-20. The project is located on the north side Spagnoli Road, 1068.53 feet west of Carlin Court in Melville, within the Town of Huntington; indicated as parcel District 0400, Section 265, Block 01, part of Lot 010 on the Suffolk County Tax Map.

Suffolk County - The Town of Riverhead, as lead agency has determined that the proposed WR Development will not have a significant adverse environmental impact. The action involves the proposal to subdivide 176 acres of land zoned Residence "A" into 150 single and separate parcels clustered in accordance with article XIX of the town Code and Section 281 of State Town Law to preserve approximately 33 acres of open space and scenic buffer area. The project is located on the Northeast corner of Wading River Manorville Road and Middle Country Road (SR 25), Wading River hamlet, Riverhead Township, Suffolk County, SCTM 0600-96-1-13.1 & 115-1-10.

The action involves 5,000 square feet of new construction and the development of 10 acres into athletic fields. The project is located on Highway 25A in the Town of Miller Place.

Suffolk County - The New York State Education Department, as lead agency has determined the need for and accepted a Draft Environmental Impact Statement on the proposed New Elementary School, New Construction, Montauk Highway. Written comments on the Draft EIS will be accepted until May 5, 2000. The action involves the construction of an Elementary School on a 13.46 acre site situated on Montauk Highway, approximately 400 feet east of Lincoln Avenue, East Moriches, New York.

The Board of Zoning Appeals of the Incorporated Village of Lake Success, as lead agency, has received a Draft Scope from The Jain Center of America for the preparation of a Draft Environmental Impact Statement. The Positive Declaration for this action was published in the ENB on March 1, 2000. Copies of the Draft Scope submitted by the applicant are available from the contact person listed above. Public comments will be accepted by the lead agency until 5:00 p.m. on April 24, 2000. Thereafter, in accordance with 6 NYCRR 617.8, the lead agency will issue a Final Scope which the applicant must use in preparation of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement.

The Jain Center of America, Inc. is seeking to construct a temple on a 4.54 acre property situated on the north side of the North Service Road of the Long Island Expressway between Lakeville Road and Community Drive, Incorporated Village of Lake Success. The temple is proposed to have 24,917 square feet of gross floor area with a common access among this temple and two proximate properties proposed for development by the Korean Church of Brooklyn and North Shore Hebrew Academy. A portion of the subject property was formerly used as a gasoline service station with another portion being an abandoned residential subdivision.
