DEC Announces Free Pollution Prevention Workshops Designed for Metal Finishers

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will conduct four free pollution prevention workshops across the state for the metal finishers industry sector, according to Mary Werner, Acting Director of DEC's Pollution Prevention Unit.

These workshops are designed to provide compliance guidance and technical assistance to metal finishers. The workshops, supported by a grant received from the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency, are open to industry representatives, consultants, municipal employees or anyone who would like to benefit from this training.

These workshops are part of DEC's growing emphasis on pollution prevention as the most effective and least expensive way to protect our environment," said Werner. "DEC workshops have been very successful at helping industries increase the efficiency and quality of operations through waste reduction and improved environmental compliance."

Workshop participants will receive the following informational materials prepared by the DEC's Pollution Prevention Unit:

  1. Environmental Compliance and Pollution Prevention Guide for Metal Finishers; and
  2. Environmental Self-Assessment for Metal Finishers.

The half-day workshops will be held at the following locations:

Negative Declaration

Chemung County - The Chemung County Industrial Development Agency, as lead agency had determined that the proposed Horseheads Industrial Capital LLC Project will not have a significant adverse environmental impacts. The action involves the following: (A)(1)the acquisition of interest in an approximately 90 acre parcel of land together with three (3)existing buildings of approximately 1,577,000 square feet of space on the site; (2) the renovation of the Facility; and (3) the acquisition and installation of machinery and equipment for warehousing and/or distribution facility and related uses.: (B) the granting of "financial assistance"; (C)the lease or sale of the Project Facility. The project is located at 500 Ann Page Drive in the Town of Horseheads.

Monroe County - The State Education Department, as lead agency, has determined that the proposed land acquisition and construction of a New Elementary School for the Fairport Central School District, SED Project No. 26-13-01-06-0-021-001, will not have a significant environmental impact. The action involves the purchase of 88 acres of land and 106,000 square feet of new construction. The project is located on Victor Road in the Town of Perinton. No unmitigated adverse environmental effects are revealed.

Monroe County - The Town of Irondequoit, as lead agency, has determined that the proposed Lafayette Road Sewage Flow Diversion will not have a significant adverse environmental impact. The action involves the new sanitary sewer installed down an abandoned railroad town R.O.W. The project is located Lafayette Rd. Sewage Flow Diversion Project - Town of Irondequoit.

Steuben County - The Town of Erwin Planning Board, as lead agency has determined that the proposed Expansion of the South Parking Lot, Sullivan Park Research Center will not have a significant environmental impact. The action involves the installation of a 721 stall parking lot with sidewalks, storm drainage, lighting and landscaping; modifications to the existing South Parking Lot, construction of a new building entrance; and relocation of a section of Science Center Drive and the DV Access Road affecting a total of eighteen (18) acres. The project is located at the Corning Incorporated Sullivan Park Research Center, Science Center Drive, Gang Mills, Town of Erwin, Steuben County, New York.

Notice of Positive Declaration and Acceptance of Draft EIS

Orleans County - The State Education Department, as lead agency, has determined the need for and accepted a Draft EIS on the proposed acquisition of land and additions/alterations to the Junior - Senior High School in the Kendall Central School District, SED Project No. 45-06-07-04-0-004-003. Comments are requested on the Draft EIS and will be accepted by the contact person until May 4, 2000. The action involves the purchase of 20 acres of land adjacent to existing property and 4,000 square feet of new additions. The project is located on Roosevelt Highway in the Town of Kendall.

Notice of Acceptance of Final EIS

Monroe County - The Town of Penfield Planning Board, as lead agency has accepted a Final Environmental Impact Statement on the proposed Mayer Farms Subdivision. The action involves the preliminary subdivision and site plan approval for 169 single family residential lots, final subdivision and site plan approval for 27 lots to be known as Section 1 of the Mayer Farms Subdivision, and an environmental Protection Overlay District Permit for work on a designated watercourse. The total property consists of 109.8 acres and is zoned R-1-20. The project is located at 1200 Five Mile Line road (on the east side of Five Mile Line road, approximately 300 feet south of rosebud Trail) Town of Penfield, Monroe County.
