Project Description:

Applicant proposes to continue development of an artificial reef in Long Island Sound know as the Smithtown Artificial Reef. The activity involves the placement of several types of inert material, including decommissioned steel vessels and vehicles, large pieces of concrete, and natural rock, in defined sections of the three-acre reef footprint separated by sections of undisturbed, natural bottom to create some three-dimensional, hard structure fisheries habitat in an area which predominantly consists of flat, sandy substrate. The reef is intended to provide enhanced recreational fishing and diving opportunities. Low tide water depths range from 30 - 40 feet at the site, which is located about a mile north of Long Beach (center point approximate coordinates: 40 55.965' N and 73 11.150' W), Town of Smithtown.
