Permit(s) Applied for:

Article 15 Title 5 Excavation & Fill in Navigable Waters
Section 401 - Clean Water Act Water Quality Certification

Project is Located:

Sodus, Wayne County

Project Description:

The US Dept of the Army (USACE) is proposing to dredge the Federal Navigation Channels of Great Sodus Bay Harbor to maintain sufficient depth for shallow-draft recreational and commercial vessels. The channels would be dredged to a depth of -15 feet Low Water Depth Datum (LWD). Dredging would take place between July 15th and October 1st. The USACE estimates that up to 95,000 cubic yards of material will be dredged by means of a mechanical of hydraulic dredge. Dredged material would then be placed in either the existing USACE open-lake disposal area or in a new 93-acre nearshore placement area for course-grain sediment, to be located approximately 2,000 feet east of the Harbor's East Pier. The northern limits of the nearshore placement area would be at the -11 foot low water datum contour and the southern limit would be located at the ordinary high water mark. Sediment analysis has demonstrated that the material is suitable for both open-lake disposal and nearshore placement.
