Negative Declaration

Suffolk County - The Town of East Hampton Town Board, as lead agency, has determined that the proposed Southern Pine Beetle Infestation Emergency Action will not have a significant adverse environmental impact. The Town of East Hampton Town Supervisor Larry Cantwell declared a local State of Emergency in an effort to combat and manage an outbreak of Southern Pine Beetle infestations in a section of Northwest Woods. The Southern Pine Beetle infestation is present on both public parkland and private properties where it is currently estimated over 2,000 trees are infested. The beetles are active and the infestation is spreading with the potential to kill trees a forested area containing more than 4 square miles of pitch pines (Pinus rigida) and white pines (Pinus strobus). The Town proposes to follow the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) protocol for management of such infestations which includes selective cutting of infested pitch pines and an adjoining buffer. The majority of the work is expected to be completed before spring. However, minor cutting to suppress small eruptions will continue as long as necessary. The project is located in the Town of East Hampton, New York.
