Project Description:

The applicant is proposing, through the NYSDEC Young Forest Initiative, disturbance to NYS Freshwater Wetland CIC-17, Class II, in association to the approved habitat management plan for the Cicero Swamp Wildlife Management Area (WMA). The proposal includes the following activities for the creation and enhancement of quality, diverse habitat within the WMA, specifically habitat improvements for American Woodcock and Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnakes: cutting and prescribed burns to maintain and improve vegetation; harvesting timber to diversify forest structure; wetland/pond drawdowns to promote targeted wetland/aquatic vegetation growth; cutting and application of pesticides for invasive plant species control; rehabilitation of a water impoundment structure; removal of a beaver dam for added hydraulic control of the WMA; and the creation of two public parking lots for recreational access. The project is located northeast of Interstate 481, near Northern Boulevard and State Route 298.
