Permit(s) Applied for:

Article 17 Titles 7 & 8 Industrial SPDES - Groundwater Discharge

Project is Located:

Benton, Yates County

Project Description:

The Department has made a tentative determination to issue a new SPDES permit for the existing discharges of treated sanitary and winery production wastewater at the Fox Run Vineyard. Discharges to groundwater consist of approximately 200 gallons per day (gpd), increasing to an average of 750 gpd of treated wastewater during the fall crushing season, with peak flows of up to 2,500 gpd. Treatment includes anaerobic digestion in two stages of septic tanks, and aerobic treatment within constructed bioswale beds. Discharges are to a 1,200 square foot sub-surface leach field infiltrator bed (outfall 001) centrally located on the winery property. Since this is an innovative technology for this wastewater stream, requirements of the permit would include monthly monitoring of Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Total Suspended Solids, pH and Ammonia for the period of one year. As a tentative determination, the Department seeks comments prior to making a final decision. The file is available for review and comment at the NYSDEC Region 8 office in Avon.
