The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) is soliciting comments on a draft restoration plan for a green infrastructure project within the Gowanus Canal watershed. The draft plan can be found on the NYS DEC website at: http://www.dec.ny.gov/regulations/54189.html or it can be viewed, by request, through the contact listed below. Comments on the Draft Plan are due by April 30, 2016.

The draft plan is the result of a settlement between NYS DEC and Benson Metal Corporation after a civil complaint was brought against Benson for discharging scrap metal into the Gowanus Canal. Such scrap metal dumping can lead to water quality issues in an already degraded aquatic environment. The settlement awarded NYS DEC $27,000 to be spent on restoration, replacement, or acquisition of the equivalent of the injured natural resource or ecosystem services that were lost as a result of the damage. The draft restoration plan describes a proposed green infrastructure project lead by the Gowanus Canal Conservancy, which uses school and community education and training to enhance the water quality of the Canal.

After the comment period on the Draft Plan, NYS DEC will be issuing and implementing a Final Restoration Plan.

Comments on the Draft Plan are due by April 30, 2016. Comments can be submitted to: Patrick Foster, NYS DEC, 625 Broadway, Albany, NY 12233, Phone: (518) 402-9502, E-mail: patrick.foster@dec.ny.gov.

Contact: Patrick Foster, NYS DEC, 625 Broadway, Albany, NY 12233, Phone: (518) 402-9502, E-mail: patrick.foster@dec.ny.gov.
