Project Description:

Applicant proposes to restore approximately 13 acres of degraded tidal marsh at Seatuck National Wildlife Refuge in two phases. Phase one proposes to place approximately 6,000 cubic yards of sandy material dredged from the confluence of Champlin Creek and the Great South Bay during maintenance dredging onto waterlogged portions of the marsh plain. Also proposed in phase one is the construction of a coir log living shoreline within the existing boat basin along the western shore of Champlin Creek for shoreline stabilization. Phase two proposes to remove existing earthen ditch plugs within extant mosquito grid ditches to restore flow to hydrologically isolated areas of the marsh plain, excavate new internal naturalistic channels to restore tidal exchange to waterlogged interior grid ditch cells, widen the existing inlet to Champlins Creek, and the filling of legacy mosquito ditches and remaining waterlogged areas of the marsh plain with existing stockpiled dredge material and material excavated from within the marsh. The project is proposed in the tidal marsh area of the refuge associated with Champlins Creek and the Great South Bay. Portions of the proposed work are also mapped as regulated freshwater wetland BE-11. The project is located at 500 St. Marks Lane, Islip, Town of Islip, Suffolk County, SCTM 500-463-1-5 & 500-463-1-3.
