Notice of Acceptance of Final GEIS

Herkimer County - The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC), as lead agency, has accepted a Final Generic Environmental Impact Statement on the proposed North Country National Scenic Trail Adirondack Park Trail Plan. The Adirondack Park Trail Plan and Final GEIS are available on line at:

This Plan recommends the incorporation of the North Country National Scenic Trail into the Adirondack Park trail, and outlines a viable route for the Trail across the central region of the Park, crossing mostly state‐owned land, and will serve as a starting point for inclusion of the Trail into state‐land Unit Management Plans. It is recommended that the Trail follow approximately 81 miles of existing foot trail and approximately 39 miles of new trail construction within the Park. It is estimated that approximately 27 miles of temporary connectors along roads will be initially utilized to make connections between trail segments along this route. It is estimated that the Trail, within the Park, will be approximately 158 total miles in length when complete. The project is located in the Town of Ohio in Herkimer County, Towns of Morehouse, Arietta, Lake Pleasant, Wells, and Indian Lake in Hamilton County, Towns of Johnsburg and Chester in Warren County, and Towns of Minerva, Schroon, North Hudson, Moriah, and Crown Point in Essex County.
