Ulster County - The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC), as lead agency, has determined that the proposed Triploid Grass Carp Stocking In Hidden Valley Lake will not have a significant adverse environmental impact. The action involves a proposal by John Walsh to stock Hidden Valley Lake (27 acres) with United States Fish and Wildlife Service certified Triploid Grass Carp (a sterile fish) for the purpose of controlling nuisance levels of submerged aquatic vegetation. Over the last several years, aquatic vegetation (Elodea, coontail, duckweed and filamentous algae) have become over abundant, affecting the aesthetic and recreational use of the lake for boating, swimming and fishing. John Walsh proposes to stock up to 200 sterile Triploid Grass Carp (8-12 per acre of submerged aquatic vegetation) in the lake. The potential of Triploid Grass Carp escaping from Hidden Valley Lake will be very unlikely, given that the outlet flow is intermittent, the lake's outlet is blocked by a physical barrier, and the outlet flows underground. The target water will therefore be the only water affected by the Triploid Grass Carp stocking.

NYS DEC Bureau of Fisheries has reviewed John Walsh's stocking permit application and plans to issue a permit that will allow John Walsh to stock up to 200 Triploid Grass Carp in Hidden Valley Lake. An evaluation of the effectiveness of this stocking and a new assessment of the vegetation will be necessary before further Tripoid Grass Carp stocking permits for this lake will be considered by NYS DEC. The project is located on Lake View Drive in the Town of Rosendale, New York.
