Corrective Measures Complete for the Amphenol Corporation Bendix Connector Division

Project Location: River Street
Sidney NY 13838

EPA ID No.: NYD981133184

Project Summary

In February 1991, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) issued a permit that required Amphenol Corporation to provide post-closure care of a closed hazardous waste disposal facility with two surface impoundments. The impoundments were closed in 1985 and 1986, after which the underlying contaminated soils were excavated and removed to cleanup levels protective of the underlying aquifer. A cover, composed of a 2.5 foot thick layer of compacted soil now overlays the two surface impoundments. A groundwater collection and treatment system began operation in 1987 to remediate groundwater contaminated with trichloroethene and tetrachloroethene. After substantial remediation of the groundwater, the NYS DEC approved shut-down of the collection and treatment system in 1995. Amphenol continued to perform semi-annual groundwater sampling. Groundwater contamination levels ultimately stabilized near and below applicable standards, and Amphenol petitioned to decommission all site groundwater monitoring wells. The petition was granted and all site monitoring wells were abandoned in October 2012.

Tentative Determination

NYS DEC has determined that the Amphenol Corporation, owner of the Amphenol Corporation Bendix Connector Division site, has fulfilled its obligations under the post-closure permit and that no further remedial action or monitoring is required at the facility with respect to the aforementioned contamination. Additionally, NYS DEC has determined that a permit is no longer required.
