Nassau County - The Board of Education of the Sewanhaka Central High School District, as lead agency, has determined that the proposed Building Addition and Improvements at the Sewanhaka High School Building and Improvements to the Junior and Senior Vocational Buildings will not have a significant adverse environmental impact. The action involves a building addition and improvements at the Sewanhaka High School, located at 500 Tulip Avenue in the Incorporated Village of Floral Park and the hamlet of Elmont, Town of Hempstead, New York. The Sewanhaka High School encompasses three separate buildings, including the Primary High School Building, Junior Vocational Building, and the Senior Vocational Building. At the Primary High School Building, a one and two story, 34,909 ± square foot cafeteria and gymnasium addition is proposed, to be located at the southern portion of the existing high school building on existing paved, landscaped, and athletic field areas. Upon implementation of the proposed action, gross floor area at the existing Primary High School Building would increase from approximately 205,000 square feet to 239,909 ± square feet (represents a 17 ± percent expansion). Interior projects proposed at the Primary High School building include improvements to and renovations of the auditorium and locker rooms, relocation of art rooms to the existing band and chorus space (to be vacated), relocation of the library to the existing cafeteria (to be vacated), and relocation of the band and chorus room to the vacated library space. Computer, electrical, HVAC, interior lighting, and security systems would be improved, and repairs to doors, toilet refurbishment, installation of drinking fountains, and asbestos abatement of the crawl space are also proposed. The proposed action also includes the reconstruction of the roof at the Primary High School building.

Proposed building improvements at the Junior Vocational Building specifically include masonry repairs, interior lighting upgrades, and flooring and restroom improvements. At the Senior Vocational Building, proposed improvements include the installation of four new garage lifts, replacement of the roof, masonry repairs, and flooring improvements.

Site improvements at the Sewanhaka High School consist of improvements to the existing grass-surfaced athletic field areas to create two multi-purpose sports fields, a baseball field, and a softball field; installation of new synthetic turf at the existing grass-surfaced multi-sport field; renovation of the existing running track; installation of new track and field equipment/events; improvements to the existing basketball courts; and improvements to irrigation systems. Also proposed is the installation of drainage improvements, as necessary, to accommodate stormwater runoff generated from the proposed building addition.
