Public Notice

Re-Route of Portions of the Wilmington Snowmobile Trail and the Cooper Kill Trail

Lead Agency: New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC)

Project Description: Re-route two sections of the Wilmington Snowmobile Trail (this trail connects Wilmington to the Forestdale Road in the Town of Black Brook). This project was approved, see pages 64-68 in the Wilmington Wild Forest UMP/GEIS October 2005. These re-routes will be constructed to Class II (community connector) trail standards in accordance with NYS DEC's Management Guidance on "Snowmobile Trail Siting, Construction and Maintenance on Forest Preserve Lands in the Adirondack Park". Tree cutting will be in compliance with Lands and Forest Policy # 91-2 on Cutting, Removal or Destruction of Trees and Other Vegetation on Forest Preserve Lands.

The first re-route is on the Cooper Kill Trail at a location where the trail passes through a wetland. At this area the wetland is being damaged by hiking use of the trail which is causing widening and braiding of the trail. The re-route will be about 550 feet long. For the construction of this re-route there will be up to 47 trees cut, 60 feet of bog bridging built, and one 12 foot long bridge built.

The second re-route is at a location where a steep slope at a curve has created safety concerns for snowmobile riders. This re-route will be about 200 feet long. There will be up to 13 trees cut for the construction of this re-route as well as a 20 feet long section of the re-route that will require a bench cut.

Location: Wilmington Wild Forest in the Town of Black Brook, Clinton County and the Town of Wilmington, Essex County, New York.

Contact: Steven Guglielmi, NYS DEC - Region 5 Office, Division of Lands and Forests, P.O. Box 296, Ray Brook, NY 12977, Phone: (518) 897-1291.
