Public Meeting Notice

Public Informational Meeting on the Forest Health of Sand Flats State Forest/Salvage Harvest due to Forest Insect and Disease Infestation

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) will be holding an informational meeting on Thursday, September 26, 2013 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Boonville Town Hall, 13149 New York Route 12, Boonville, NY 13309. The meeting will be held to discuss forest management activities due to forest insect and disease infestation on Sand Flats State Forest.

Explanations will be provided by NYS DEC staff regarding the fungal disease and health condition of Sand Flats State Forest as well as different management actions proposed to address the problem. Most of the management actions will be to clearcut the affected stands to salvage the 600 acres of wood fiber from the dying trees. Explanations will be given regarding plans to prepare the site for reforestation through planting or naturally regenerating the stands.

The public will be allowed in the Town Hall building at 6:00 p.m. A formal presentation by NYS DEC staff will begin at 7:00 p.m. explaining the problem and plans to address it. NYS DEC staff will be available to answer questions following the presentation.

The Sand Flats State Forest is located in the Town of Lyonsdale. Lewis County, New York.

Negative Declaration

Herkimer County - The Town of Herkimer Planning Board, as lead agency, has determined that the proposed Valley Health Services Proposed Assisted Living Facility and Future Enriched Housing Facility will not have a significant adverse environmental impact. The action involves a proposal by Valley Health Services for the construction of an assisted living facility and future enriched housing facility on a 221.8 acre property. Of that property, 46.1 acres is proposed to be developed in two (2) phases. Phase 1 includes the construction of a 24,000 square foot assisted living facility with 48 beds, access roads, parking areas and related utilities. The future phasing, Phase 2, consists of the construction of an additional 5,000 square foot future expansion area which can house an additional 20 beds and a 24,000 square foot enriched housing facility with 36 beds. A 100 foot by 60 foot maintenance barn is also proposed as part of the future phasing. The proposed facilities will be served by municipal water and an on-site wastewater treatment system. The project is located on Pine Grove Road (County Route 106) in the Town of Herkimer, New York.
