Projects that may be proposed in the plan include a timber management plan, new motorized and non-motorized trails and construction or rehabilitation of parking areas, lean-to's and water access sites.

The Unit Management Plan is designed to cover all environmental considerations for the Unit and forms the basis for all management activities within the Unit. A team of NYS DEC staff has been assigned and is responsible for developing the plan. The team includes staff from the Divisions of Lands and Forests, Fish and Wildlife and Marine Resources, Operations and Public Protection. The planning process will involve an inventory of the natural resources of the area and an analysis of the ability of its lands and waters to accommodate public recreational use. The guidelines for the Westward Waters State Forest Management Unit require that they be managed to encourage appropriate kinds of recreation while providing a high level of protection to the natural resources.
