Project Description:

As part of its post-Superstorm Sandy recovery activities, the applicant proposes to use a hopper dredge to excavate approximately 2.8 million cubic yards of sand from a previously used dredge site known as Borrow Area 2, located approximately one and one-half miles south of the Rockaway Peninsula in the Atlantic Ocean off Beach 108th Street. The sand would be placed on Rockaway Beach between Beach 19th and Beach 149th Streets, and graded into a beach berm to restore beach areas eroded by the storm of October 29-30, 2012.

Availability of Application Documents:

Filed application documents, and Department draft permits where applicable, are available for inspection during normal business hours at the address of the contact person. To ensure timely service at the time of inspection, it is recommended that an appointment be made with the contact person.

State Environmental Quality Review (SEQR) Determination:

Project is not subject to SEQR because it is a Type II action.

SEQR Lead Agency: None Designated

State Historic Preservation Act (SHPA) Determination:

Cultural resource lists and map have been checked. No registered, eligible or inventoried archaeological sites or historic structures were identified at the project location. No further review in accordance with SHPA is required.

Coastal Management:

This project is located in a Coastal Management area and is subject to the Waterfront Revitalization and Coastal Resources Act.

Opportunity for Public Comment:

Comments on this project must be submitted in writing to the Contact Person no later than Jun 10, 2013.

Project Description:

As part of its post-Superstorm Sandy recovery activities, the applicant proposes to use a dredge to excavate approximately 2.6 million cubic yards of sand from the Rockaway Inlet of the Jamaica Bay Federal Navigation Channel to a depth of -22 feet below mean low water plus a 2 foot overdepth. The proposed dredge area is beyond the routine periodic maintenance dredging dimensions for this inlet. The material would be placed on the Coney Island Beach, Brooklyn, between Norton Point on the west and Corbin Place on the east, and graded into a beach berm to restore beach areas eroded by the storm of October 29-30, 2012.
