Project Description:

The applicant proposes to use a cutterhead dredge to excavate 800,000 cubic yards of sand sediments from the mouth of the inlet to a depth of -18 feet below the low tide level. The proposed dredge area is beyond the routine periodic maintenance dredging dimensions for this inlet. The sand material will be used to restore hurricane damaged dunes and beaches along the Atlantic Ocean shoreline of the Rockaways. The material will be pumped to the shoreline and graded into a beach berm. The project is located in Atlantic Beach and the Rockaways in Nassau and Queens counties.

The Department has made a tentative determination for a modification of a permit for an existing discharge of 200gpd average to 10,000gpd maximum of stormwater from the PBS secondary containment and loading rack areas of the fuel terminal facility listed above. New information recently submitted to the Department indicates that the permit should be modified to include, a limit for flow, and sampling for Total Dissolved Solids, Total Suspended Solids, Chrysene, Flourene, Naphthalene and Pyrene. The proposed discharge is located within an area designated as a sole source aquifer. The following water purveyors have been identified as having service areas located within a 3-mile radius of the applicant's facility: Suffolk County Water Authority.
