Project Description:

The applicant proposes to expand an existing substation to meet growing energy demands. The site is part of a former manufactured gas plant with an on-going remediation and monitoring program. The project involves the installation of new circuit breakers, transformers and related equipment, a retaining wall, foundations, footings, and a dry/wet swale with associated drainage structures to increase stormwater detention and filtration. NYS Regulated Freshwater Wetlands are located along the west side of the site. The project is located at the end of Grove St., Glen Cove, Town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County.

The Department has made a tentative determination to modify a permit for an existing discharge of 200,000 gallons per day of treated iron filter backwash wastewater from an equalization treatment system which discharges to Reynolds Channel. New information submitted to the department indicates the permit should be modified to include a new limit for flow and a log book recording of the visual observations of the conditions of every discharge. Also, the requirement to sample for iron is being removed from this permit. The facility is located at Long Island American Water, Plant #6, 1540 Beech Street, Atlantic Beach, Town of Hempstead, Nassau County. Project Description:

The applicant proposes to increase the lateral extent of the below water-table excavation within this existing mine and to mine an additional 3.8 above the water table. Within this 3.8 acre area, no existing vegetation will be disturbed. Only areas previously affected by mining will be disturbed. The size of the proposed lake will be increased from 42.96 acres to 67.3 and the single family dwellings which were part of the closure plan for the prior NYSDEC permit have been removed from the plan. The depth of the lake will not increase below the 100 foot depth which was previously approved by NYSDEC. The life of the mine will be 20 to 25 years. The operational aspects of the mine will remain the same.
