ENB - Region 1 Notices 8/15/2012
Suffolk County - The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC), as lead agency, has determined that the proposed Sparrow Mining Modification will not have a significant adverse environmental impact. The action involves a proposal by the applicant to increase the lateral extent of the below water-table excavation within this existing mine and to mine an additional 3.8 above the water table. Within this 3.8 acre area, no existing vegetation will be disturbed. Only areas previously affected by mining will be disturbed.
The size of the proposed lake will be increased from 42.96 acres to 67.3 and the single family dwellings which were part of the closure plan for the prior NYS DEC permit have been removed from the plan. The depth of the lake will not increase below the 100 foot depth which was previously approved by NYS DEC. The life of the mine will be 20 to 25 years. The operational aspects of the mine will remain the same.
The project is located at 151 South Street in Manorville, Town of Brookhaven, New York.
