Public Scoping Meeting Notice

Oneida Hills Draft Unit Management Plan

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) will hold a public scoping meeting on Thursday, July 19, 2012, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Steuben Town Hall, 9458 Soule Road, Steuben, NY (Turn west off of State Route 12 at Remsen onto Starr Hill Road, turn left on Fuller Road then continue to Soule Road). The NYS DEC is seeking public input on the development of the Oneida Hills Draft Unit Management Plan (UMP). Persons are encouraged to attend to learn more about the Unit and express their opinion on the management of the Unit. The public meeting will begin in an open house format that will allow the public to interact with NYS DEC staff and view displays. There will be a brief presentation by NYS DEC staff on information about the Unit and the Unit Management Planning Process. The meeting will then be turned over to the public to make comments. Input on the initial development of the plan will be accepted until September 30, 2012.

The Unit Management Plan is designed to cover all environmental considerations for the Unit and forms the basis for all management activities within the Unit. State forests are managed for watershed protection, production of timber and other forest products as well as recreation.

A team of NYS DEC staff has been assigned and is responsible for developing the plan. The team includes staff from the Divisions of Lands and Forests, Fish and Wildlife and Marine Resources, Operations and Public Protection. The first phase of UMP preparation includes: developing a detailed map of the unit; inventory of resources (flora and fauna); mapping existing facilities and structures; and general recommendations for public use and future plans.

The Oneida Hills Unit is located in the Oneida County Towns of Ava, Boonville, Lee, Steuben, and Western.

The Oneida Hills Management Area is comprised of nine State Forests. The Oneida Hills Unit is a patchwork of State owned parcels located southwest of Boonville, north of Rome and east of Taberg.

Buck Hill State Forest- 1,692 acres
Canada Creek State Forest - 627 acres
Clark Hill State Forest - 2,872 acres
Jackson Hill State Forest - 1,409 acres
Penn Mountain State Forest - 3,725 acres
Point Rock State Forest - 1,202 acres
South Hill State Forest - 522 acres
Webster Hill State Forest - 1,064 acres
West Branch State Forest - 527 acres
