Notice of Acceptance of Final EIS
Herkimer and Lewis Counties - The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC), as lead agency, has accepted a Final Environmental Impact Statement on the proposed Independence River Wild Forest Unit Management Plan Amendment. The Final EIS is available on line at: http://www.dec.ny.gov/lands/22574.html.
The action involves a completed Amendment and Final EIS to the Independence River Wild Forest Unit Management Plan (UMP) in conformance with the November 2009 "Management Guidance - Snowmobile Trail Siting, Construction and Maintenance on Forest Preserve Lands in the Adirondack Park". Accordingly, some trails and trail segments in the unit are proposed for closure, while new trails are proposed to be constructed in more environmentally suitable locations. In addition, snowmobile trail classes were identified for each trail that will remain open. The project is located in the Towns of Watson, Greig, and Lyonsdale in Lewis County; and the Town of Webb in Herkimer County, New York.
