Herkimer County - Herkimer County, as lead agency, has determined that the proposed New Herkimer County Sheriff and Correctional Facility will not have a significant adverse environmental impact. The action involves the construction of a new correctional facility and to potentially combine it with the functions of the Sheriff's Office. The proposed facility will replace the County's current aged and overcapacity facility.
The correctional facility will have the capacity of approximately 130 cells with a total gross area of about 87,000 square feet. Twenty-four additional cells (double occupancy) may be constructed at a later date. The final size and type of construction of the building will be determined by the project budget, building function and layout efficiencies, life cycle costs, and other factors determined during design development. The structure is anticipated being 2 stories with a height of about 25 feet. Parking accommodations will be provided for staff and visitors. Communications equipment would potentially be provided to accommodate the 911 system and for the correctional facility. The project is located on a 26 ± acre site on the west side New York State Route 28 in the Village of Herkimer, New York.
