ENB - Region 4 Notices 12/15/2010

Notice of Acceptance of Final GEIS

Greene County - The Town of Windham, as lead agency, has accepted a Final Generic Environmental Impact Statement on the proposed Development Capacities of the Town of Windham. Copies of the Final GEIS is available at the Windham Public Library, Main Street, Tannersville, New York 12485; the Windham Town Hall, PO Box 96, Hensonville, New York and on line at: http://www.sterlingenvironmental.com/clients/town-windham/index.htm.

The Town of Windham, as a local government, is responsible to plan for and oversee the sustainability of its community (including potential growth) while ensuring that this generation of residents protects our natural resources for the next generation. The Town desires to create a sustainable community primarily through the creation of a diverse economy. The key to a sustainable community is stable employment that provides a livable wage. A community needs a nucleus of permanent residence to support the basic services necessary for those residents to have a high quality of life. To realize these goals, the Town must expand its tourism industry to become a full four season destination community. The present tourism based local economy is too reliant on the ski industry and related businesses serving Windham Mountain. The resulting economy is therefore too susceptible to weather and economic downtimes affecting the ski industry. More diverse recreation and tourism are envisioned. The project is located throughout the Town of Windham, New York.
