Hemlock-Canadice Unit Management Plan Scoping Meeting

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) will conduct an open house style public scoping meeting on October 26, 2010 at the Springwater Firehall, 8145 South Main Street, Springwater, NY 14560. An informational open house will be held from 4:00 to 6:00pm and 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Display stations will be set up and committee members will be available for discussion and comments. There will be no formal presentation, but the public is invited to arrive at any time during the listed hours. For additional information or accommodations please contact NYS DEC at the below address.

Members of the public may provide NYS DEC with comments or concerns regarding the management of Hemlock-Canadice State Forest. Comments may be general or specific, and will be accepted at any time throughout the process. The plan has not yet been written, and public input will assist NYS DEC in assembling it.

The Hemlock-Canadice Unit Management Plan will be a ten year plan for the multiple use of the 6,684 acre Hemlock-Canadice State Forest, and will be consistent with the Strategic Plan for State Forest Management. (Hemlock Park, the water treatment facilities and parking field for the fairgrounds are not part of the Hemlock-Canadice State Forest, and will not be included in this UMP.) The plan will offer general information on the unit's history and geology, an inventory of the unit's resources, such as mineral resources, vegetative types and stages, fish, wildlife and habitat and a summary of identified issues, such as access, vegetative management and oil and gas leasing. It also describes the proposed goals and objectives and policy constraints in managing the unit.

The vision of the plan will be to ensure the biological integrity, improvement and protection of the Hemlock-Canadice State Forest. This shall be done within the multiple use concept of management, which strives to serve the needs of the people of New York State by providing a broad based, biologically diverse ecosystem. Of particular importance is the protection of Hemlock and Canadice lakes as sources of water for the City of Rochester.

This plan will direct the future management of the property which will include such activities as: protecting water quality; maintenance and improvement of access to the site; managing natural vegetation, including native grasslands and woodlands; controlling exotic species; preservation of historical and archaeological resources; and recreational facilities.

The Hemlock-Canadice State Forest is located in the Towns of Springwater, Conesus, and Livonia in Livingston County, Towns of Richmond and Canadice in Ontario County, New York.
