Permit(s) Applied for:

Article 17 Titles 7 & 8 Industrial SPDES - Surface Discharge

Project is Located:

Huntington, Suffolk County

Project Description:

The Department has prepared a draft permit and made a tentative determination to approve a modification to the State Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (SPDES) permit for the Northport Power Station. This SPDES permit authorizes the discharge of non-contact cooling water, treated wastewater, boiler blowdown, storm water, and sanitary wastewater to both Long Island Sound and groundwater. National Grid proposes to replace the remaining boiler water demineralizer system with a Reverse Osmosis (RO) treatment system similar to the system installed in 2007. This system will treat water from the municipal water supply for use in the Northport Power Station boilers, and will result in a continuous discharge from the RO system to outfall 008. No changes to the existing discharge limits or monitoring frequencies are proposed. The Northport Power Station is located on on the north shore of Long Island, on Waterside Ave. and Eaton's Neck Rd., Northport, Town of Huntington.
