ENB - Region 8 Notices 10/21/2009
Steuben County - The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC), as lead agency, has determined that the proposed Erwin Wildlife Management Area, Stand A-5 and A-15, Clearcut will not have a significant adverse environmental impact. The action involves the overstory removal (clear cut) of oak timber which is approximately 120 years old. The age of the trees, successive gypsy moth infestations, and severe drought, have weakened and caused significant mortality in the overstory trees, necessitating their removal. These stands were previously harvested in 2003 as part of a two stage Shelterwood Regeneration system. Oak Silvah analysis indicates these stands now have acceptable numbers of seedlings of desirable species present to regenerate to new stands. This action is discussed in the Erwin Unit Management Plan and has been subject to public review. The project is located on Erwin Wildlife Management Area, 2 miles south of the Village of Coopers Plains, in the Town of Erwin, New York.
