ENB - Region 2 Notices 4/1/2009

Public Notice

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) will hold public meetings on the Southern Staten Island Unit Management Plan (UMP) Wednesday, April 15th from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. and from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) on the Mission of the Immaculate Virgin Campus, 6581 Hylan Boulevard, Staten Island, NY 10309. The public is encouraged to attend to ask questions of staff and to submit written and oral comments on the draft plan. Those unable to attend the meetings may submit comments to the contact person by mail or by e-mail to: mtlorette.dec.state.ny.us. The draft UMP is available for review on the NYS DEC public website: http://www.dec.ny.gov/lands/53070.html and at the NYS DEC regional office in Long Island City. In an effort to conserve natural resources, we encourage reviewing the plan online or by requesting a CD. Please note that due to the large file size, not all of the figures will be viewable on the website.

Comments on the plan will be accepted until May 30th, 2009.

The Southern Staten Island Unit Management Plan encompasses five separate parcels: Mount Loretto Unique Area, Lemon Creek, Bloesser's Pond, Arden Heights Woods and North Mount Loretto State Forest. Collectively, these properties total 359 acres of open space, and include forest, grassland, freshwater wetland, tidal wetland and coastal marine habitats. Since their acquisition, these sites have been managed to provide a blend of public access and natural resource preservation. The draft Unit Management Plan (UMP) establishes management goals and strategies for the next ten years, providing a mid-term review after five years. Already, we are anticipating updates to the plan to address as yet unidentified needs for our newest parcel, North Mount Loretto State Forest.
