ENB - Region 8 Notices 1/21/2009
Steuben County - The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC), as lead agency, has determined that the proposed Erwin Wildlife Management Area, Stand A-5, Clearcut will not have a significant adverse environmental impact. The action involves the overstory removal (clearcut) of oak timber which is approximately 120 years old. The age of the trees, successive gypsy moth infestations, and severe drought, have weakened and caused significant mortality in the overstory trees, necessitating their removal. This stand was previously harvested in 2003 as part of a two stage shelterwood regeneration system. Oak Silvah analysis indicates this stand now has acceptable numbers of seedlings of desirable species present to regenerate to a new stand. This action is listed in the Erwin Unit Management Plan which has been subject to public review. The project is located two miles south of the Village of Coopers Plains in the Town of Erwin, New York.
