Project Description:

The proposed action is the mining of sand and gravel and material processing with a portable dry-screen and crusher, each having a maximum capacity of less than 150 tons per hour, on 31.9 acres of land out of 53.15 contiguous acres owned by the applicant. There is an existing farm gravel road from Hodnett Road into the site, located approximately 340 feet from the northerly limits of the property and approximately 3100 feet from the intersection of Hodnett Road and Allegany County Road #3, which will be utilized as the mining haul road. The estimated life of the mine is 29 years and the reclamation objective is to return the land suitable for use in agricultural crop production.

The proposed project will result in the excavation of approximately 2,000,000 tons of topsoil, sand and gravel aggregate from a 33.57 acre area within a 281 acre parcel owned by Mr. William Smith. The proposed 33.57 acre mine involves increasing the size of an existing pit gradually over an estimated 20 years. The reclamation objective is agriculture, and the reclaimed elevation of the mine floor will be above the existing water table.The mine is located at the intersection of NY Route 78 and NY Route 362, and is immediately west of the Hamlet of Smith Corners, which is east of Poplar Tree Road.
