Article 24 Freshwater Wetlands

Project is Located:

Riverhead, Suffolk County

Project Description:

The applicant proposes to create a 154,700 square foot storm water pollution abatement pond and shallow stream within and adjacent to an existing NYSDEC regulated freshwater wetland (#R-24) already in use as a storm water recharge basin. Wetland plantings will be installed subsequent to creation of the stream and regrading of the pond to help absorb pollutants in the storm water runoff. The existing pond will be enlarged by 52,700 square feet. An existing athletic track which currently circles the pond will be replaced by a 4 foot wide wood chip trail with two small bridges. The applicant also proposes to place 4,700 cubic yards of fill within a second regulated freshwater wetland (# R-23) on the property, also in use as a storm water basin. The placement of fill will result in the elimination of this wetland. As mitigation, the wetland area to be created is in a 3 to 1 ratio to the wetland area to be lost. The project is located at 1225 Ostrander Avenue, Riverhead, Suffolk County, SCTM# 0600-82-3-6.
