Permit(s) Applied for:
Section 401 - Clean Water Act Water Quality Certification
Project is Located:
Southampton, Suffolk County
Project Description:
The applicant requests a new Water Quality Certificate for the on-going New York State Interim Plan implemented to mitigate severe erosion occurring west of the Westhampton Beach groin field. The plan, known as the Westhampton Interim Project, was initially approved in June 1995, and called for renourishment cycles approximately every three years. Since that water quality certificate reached the end of its term, the applicant has applied to implement the plan within the footprint of the original project (22,000 feet) as needed starting with the 3rd periodic nourishment at Westhampton Beach to be conducted this fall. The 3rd renourishment will require approximately 1,035,000 cubic yards of material to be placed south of Dune Road to re-establish the beach berm with a width of 90 feet and a maximum height of 9.5 feet referenced to NGVD. The berm will be wider in certain areas to address the erosion that has taken place since the last renourishment. Sand fill will be obtained from previously approved offshore borrow areas. In addition, the applicant proposes to remove scattered stones in the vicinity of groin 15 at Westhampton Beach. The project is located on the south side of Dune road in the villages of Westhampton Beach, and Westhampton Dunes, Southampton Town, Suffolk County
