Project Description:
The New York Power Authority (NYPA) proposes to install a fish deterrent system at the entrance to a side channel of the Mohawk River which conveys water to the Crescent Hydroelectric Project powerhouse. The purpose of the fish deterrent system is to form a curtain of sound that will serve to guide blueback herring past the entrance to the side channel and away from the powerhouse. The fish deterrent system is intended to guide the herring further downstream towards a notch in Crescent Dam A and the Waterford Flight. The fish deterrent system will not be installed in the main channel which is maintained for navigation by the New York State Canal Corporation.
The proposed fish deterrent system will be comprised of onshore and offshore components. A 6 feet by 6 feet pre-cast concrete underwater platform will serve as a support pad for the sound projectors which will be mounted on an adjustable frame. When installed, the platform will extend about 4 feet above the bed of the river. An approximately 1,800 feet long power cable will be installed from the platform to the power house. The power cable will lay on the riverbed with the exception of an approximately 150 feet long section near the dam which will be buried in a trench about 6 to 8 inches below the riverbed.
NYPA's Crescent Hydroelectric Project is located on Cohoes Crescent Road in the Town of Colonie, Albany County, New York.
