Location: Olympic Ski Jumping Complex on NYS Route 86 in the Town of North Elba, New York.
Comment Period Ends: October 4, 2007
Project Description: The action involves a proposed seasonal Biathlon Targeting Range at the Olympic Ski Jumping Complex within a 40-foot by 220-foot area adjacent to and to be used in conjunction with a previously approved paved roller skiing loop. The range will consist of: four, 50-meter long shooting lanes; a covered shelter, berms, baffles and a backstop designed to prevent bullets from leaving the range under any conditions and to reduce noise, and a targeting/lead collection system that will contain all bullets fired. Only biathletes training for Olympic Winter Games, shooting .22 short caliber rifles, will utilize the range. Teams with up to five biathletes will train up to five times per week for up to two hours per day, shooting up to 60 rounds per person per day. The range will operate annually from June 1 to October 15 and November 15 to March 15, up to seven days a week, a maximum of four hours per day between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
