Orange County - The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, as lead agency, has determined that the proposed control of undesirable vegetation (Purple loosestrife) on Stewart State Reforestation Area will not have a significant adverse environmental impact. The action involves the application of herbicides glyphosate (Rodeo) or Triclopyr (Renovate 3) or equivalent to control and rid sites of the undesirable, introduced, non-native and invasive vegetation purple loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) on a wet meadow containing specimens of purple milkweed (Asclepias purpurascens), as well as bordering on a larger population of this rare species. The area encompasses 3 acres on Stewart State Forest Reforestation Area. This action will kill the undesirable vegetation, and allow the sites to be occupied by native vegetation. The only vegetation to be controlled is the target species. Impact on public health is minimal. The wet meadow is not usually visited by the public. The herbicide applicator is a licensed applicator. The applicator will follow herbicide label instructions. Time and application rate will be determined by the applicator and will be according to label instructions. The project is located at Stewart State Forest Reforestation Area, Town of Montgomery, near South Barron Road.
