Kids in the Woods Summer Day Camps

Experience "Kids in the Woods," a week-long summer program at Reinstein Woods that gets kids outside and connects them with nature!

Camp Descriptions

Little Sprouts (Grades K-1)
Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM
Two options:
Week 1: July 7-11, 2014
Week 2: August 11-15, 2014

Each half-day adventure will feature sensory explorations into the lives of animals and plants. Campers will discover the wonders of nature through music, movement, art and play.

Cost per child:
$75.00 Friends of Reinstein Woods Members
$85.00 Non-members

Extended care is available from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM at $10.00 per day.

Nature Explorers (Grades 2-4)
Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
Two options:
Week 1: July 14-18, 2014
Week 2: August 4-8, 2014

Discover how to have fun with nature through games, crafts and hands-on experiences. Campers will get up close with butterflies and dragonflies, compete in the Animal Olympics and get in touch with simple natural wonders.

Cost per child:
$150.00 Friends of Reinstein Woods Members
$175.00 Non-members

Extended care is available from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM at $10.00 per day.

Wilderness Adventurers (Grades 5-7)
Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
Two options:
Week 1: July 21-25, 2014
Week 2: August 18-22, 2014

Encourage kids to connect with nature and their wild selves! Campers will investigate the world of the pond, learn how to bird watch, construct a wilderness survival shelter, explore the forest and more.

Cost per child:
$150.00 Friends of Reinstein Woods Members
$175.00 Non-members

Extended care is available from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM at $10.00 per day.

General Information

Camps are filled on a first come, first served basis. You will receive a confirmation packet that includes additional information about your child's participation. In the event that the session(s) you requested are full, you will be notified that your child is on a waiting list.

Friends of Reinstein Woods will provide a full refund if a camp is cancelled by Friends of Reinstein Woods or if an individual cancels at least 10 days before camp begins.

Sample Camp Itineraries (subject to change)

Little Sprouts

Day 1: Animal Explorations
Go on a wildlife safari and discover what it's like to be a wild animal through games.
• Sample activities: wildlife safari hike, animal charades, safari hat and binocular crafts.

Day 2: Forest Foray
Get in touch with the trees and plants of the woods and turn their hidden treasures into fun toys and crafts.
• Sample activities: meet a tree game, build fairy/toad houses and twig towers, leaf and flower crown craft.
Day 3: Pond Investigations
Explore the ponds and find out what kinds of creatures live there! Investigate butterflies, dragonflies, frogs, crayfish and more.
• Sample activities: pond prey and predators game, pond scooping, bug catching hike.

Day 4: Sensing Nature
• Use your senses to discover nature's sights, sounds, smells and textures.
• Sample activities: texture scavenger hunt, scratch 'n sniff hike, birds and worms relay race, camouflage collage craft.

Day 5: Go Wild!
• Let your imagination run wild when you explore nature art, music, dance and more. Families are invited to an end-of-camp celebration.
• Sample activities: make flower costumes and perfume, build a fort in the woods, design a camouflage outfit, paint with feathers and pine needles, make a natural instrument, put on an animal puppet show.

Nature Explorers & Wilderness Adventurers

Day 1: Animal Explorations
• Search for the animals of the woods and discover what it's like to be a wild animal.
• Sample activities: Animal Olympic games, build your own animal craft, wildlife safari hike.

Day 2: Forest Foray
• Meet the trees and plants of the woods and turn them into tools, toys and other crafts.
• Sample activities: blindfolded forest walk, build fairy/toad houses, wildmen in the alders hide-and-seek tag, solar print art.
Day 3: Pond Investigations
• Explore the ponds and find out what kinds of creatures live there! Investigate butterflies, dragonflies, frogs, crayfish and more.
• Sample activities: pond prey and predators game, pond scooping, bug catching hike, bug costume craft, minibeast scavenger hunt.

Day 4: Outdoor Skills
• Develop skills such as tracking, the art of camouflage, shelter building and more.
• Sample activities: stalking skills, wilderness survival shelters, rope making, camouflage outfits.
Day 5: Go Wild!
• Discover more about your favorite nature topic or explore something new. Families are invited to an end-of-camp celebration.
• Sample activities: geocaching, birding, nature journaling, exploring, nature art.

Summer Science Safari Day Camp

Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
Two options:
Week 1: July 28-August 1, 2014
Week 2: August 25-29, 2014

Experience Summer Day Camp like never before! Science comes alive at three exciting natural sites in the Lake Erie neighborhood: the Penn Dixie Site, Evangola State Park and Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve, for an exciting five days of Summer Nature Exploration. Children ages 8-12 will visit three unique natural sites for a fun week of activities. Dig for fossils, explore the world of a pond, swim at a lifeguarded beach, build a wilderness survival shelter, and see local animal and bird displays at two different nature centers and much more!

Cost per child = $180.00
