Before signing up for a course(s), the Academy's staff recommends that students take the following steps. Following these steps should insure that all students are taking individual courses or groups of courses that meet their own needs and the needs of their agencies.

  1. Consider your own wildland firefighting and incident management career goals.
  2. Consult with your supervisor and/or your unit's training officer to determine appropriate courses or course groupings to take.
  3. Review the position and training requirements listed in PMS 310-1 Wildland and Prescribed Fire Qualifications System Guide and/or those same requirements listed in FSH 5109.17 Fire and Aviation Management Qualifications Handbook.
  4. Review all course pre-requisites in PMS -901 Field Manager's Course Guide.

Your agency's training officer will be able to tell you which of these training guides is the most appropriate guide for firefighters and incident managers in your agency to follow.

Individual questions regarding the availability of courses and any other questions relating to the operation of the 2011 New York Wildfire and Incident Management Academy can be directed to the Academy's staff.
