RCRA-C Compliance - Universal Waste Management

Information for Pharmacies and other Retail Facilities

Universal wastes include certain waste batteries (e.g., lithium), mercury-containing equipment (e.g., thermostats with mercury switches), pesticides, and most commonly, lamps (e.g., discarded fluorescent bulbs).

DEC has developed a checklist that New York State pharmacies and other retailers can use to document the most important aspects of managing universal waste. These issues include:

  • Properly identifying universal waste;
  • Properly labeling and dating the waste;
  • Properly storing the waste;
  • Properly transporting and disposing of the waste.
