A Quick Look at Your Automobile Recycling Facility

This checklist is designed to help automobile recycler owners to prevent pollution and identify opportunities for additional pollution prevention measures.

Checklist Questions Yes No
Is there a way to change a process so that it does not produce a waste?
Can you use products with a lower toxicity?
Are all containers properly labeled?
Are containers closed, covered, in good condition, and away from equipment that can cause them to tip?
Is equipment well maintained to prevent leaks and spills?
Are storage and work areas clean and well organized?
Do you use drip pans to minimize the use of absorbents?
Do you use funnels or pumps when transferring or dispensing chemicals?
Is there a concrete drip pad for fluid removal and indoor waste storage?
Is there a platform or step next to storage drums so that employees do not have to lift drain pans above their waists, risking a spill?
Are measures in place to prevent materials from being discharged to the ground, dry well, or septic system?
Are floor drains sealed?
Are mercury switches removed and recycled prior to vehicle storage?
When you purchase a new product, do you ask for the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)?
Do you maintain an inventory of waste?
