DEC Number: 5151-10
New York State County: Suffolk
Statistical Area: New York City Metropolitan Area

The Holtsville air monitoring station was established by the Suffolk County Department of Health Services - Division of Environmental Quality as an ozone, oxides of nitrogen, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, fine particulate matter, methane/non-methane and meteorological site. The Suffolk County Department of Health continues to have full operational and maintenance control of the site.
Over the years, this site has recorded some of the highest ozone readings in New York State. While Suffolk County has an established quality assurance program, there are operational differences from the Department's ambient air monitoring quality assurance procedures. During the 2006 ozone season, the Department established an ozone analyzer at the site to determine if procedural differences could bring into question the accuracy and comparability between the Department's ozone sites and the Suffolk County - Holtsville site. The Department analyzer was collocated with the Suffolk County analyzer and operated in accordance with all NYS DEC quality assurance procedures to insure comparability to the rest of the BAQS monitoring network.
Data from other equipment at the Holtsville site are not certified by NYS DEC at this time.
The parameters monitored and certified by NYS DEC are indicated in the following table:
| Parameter | Sampling Method | Analysis Method | Schedule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ozone | TEI 49C Method 047 | Ultraviolet Photometric | Continuous (During NYS Ozone Seasonal) |

| PM2.5 | R & P TEOM 1400 Method 702 | TEOM 50°C Gravimetric | Continuous |
This site will be part of the EPA School Air Toxics Monitoring Program in the late Spring early Summer of 2009. Monitoring will to be conducted with canister samplers for about two months. Data will be analyzed by EPA and incorporated into the national effort for this project.

Coordinates: 40.81618 N 73.90200 W
This site was established in 1999 as a replacement site for Public School 155. Initially the site contained ozone, oxides of nitrogen, sulfur dioxide, continuous PM2.5 and continuous PM10. Following an upgrade of the electricity, additional monitoring parameters were added, creating one of the premier particulate sampling sites in New York City. The site contains criteria pollutant parameters and methods along with many experimental methods.
This site is routinely utilized by outside entities for research and data comparison. Currently the Bureau is assisting with two different air quality studies: the Columbia University Department of Medicine with the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA) and the Mount Sinai Department of Medicine Children's Air Pollution Asthma Study (CAPAS). This site will also be used as part of the initial pilot study for the New York City Community Air Survey as part of the PlaNYC initiative, starting in June 2008.
The continuous fine particulate (PM2.5) monitoring data from this site are reported to AirNow.
An Eastern Research Group (ERG) chromium sampler was added to this site in October 2007.
