The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has added a link to a translation service developed by Microsoft Inc., entitled Bing Translator, as a convenience to visitors to the DEC website who speak languages other than English.

Laboratory Proficiency Exam for Facility Operators

The Laboratory Proficiency Exam consists of about 50 multiple choice or fill-in-the-blank questions. You will be required to demonstrate a general knowledge of the following analyses:

  • Alkalinity
  • Settleable Solids
  • pH
  • Temperature
  • Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD)
  • Total Dissolved Solids
  • Chlorine Residual
  • Total Suspended Solids
  • Fecal Coliform Test
  • Volatile Suspended Solids
  • Dissolved Oxygen

Questions may cover the following areas:

  • Test Procedures
  • Interpreting Data/Results
  • Times (drying, incubation, etc.)
  • Temperatures (drying, incubation, etc.)
  • Chemicals Used
  • Units Of Expression
  • Calculating Results
  • Sampling Locations

A passing score for the Laboratory Proficiency Exam is 70%.

The lab proficiency exam has no regular schedule.
