Laboratory Proficiency Exam for Facility Operators
The Laboratory Proficiency Exam consists of about 50 multiple choice or fill-in-the-blank questions. You will be required to demonstrate a general knowledge of the following analyses:
- Alkalinity
- Settleable Solids
- pH
- Temperature
- Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD)
- Total Dissolved Solids
- Chlorine Residual
- Total Suspended Solids
- Fecal Coliform Test
- Volatile Suspended Solids
- Dissolved Oxygen
Questions may cover the following areas:
- Test Procedures
- Interpreting Data/Results
- Times (drying, incubation, etc.)
- Temperatures (drying, incubation, etc.)
- Chemicals Used
- Units Of Expression
- Calculating Results
- Sampling Locations
A passing score for the Laboratory Proficiency Exam is 70%.

The lab proficiency exam has no regular schedule.
The lab exam may be given at a NYSDEC Regional Office, and can always be taken at the Central Office in Albany on a demand basis (allow two weeks for scheduling). Call us at (518) 402-8092 to schedule an exam or answer any additional questions you may have.
