DEC presented this 50-minute webinar on May 24, 2017 and it provides assistance on the successful development of a Hazardous Waste Reduction Plan, and the subsequent Annual Status Reports and Biennial Updates required under the HWRP program:

New York State Pollution Prevention Institute (NYSP2I) has worked with numerous companies throughout NY state to assist them in reducing their generation of hazardous waste. Below are links to several case studies detailing the reduction opportunities they have found.

NYSP2I Works with Triple Cities Metal Finishing Corp and C.H. Thompson Company, Inc. on Implementation of Water Reduction Recommendations for Plating Operations

  • Challenge: Metal plating is a water-intensive manufacturing activity that requires a large quantity of solution and many rinse baths to achieve the conduction that attracts and binds finishing materials to the base metal substrate. For high volume and large metal parts, this process creates an enormous demand for water. TCMF and CHT sought to reduce water consumption in these operations.

NYSP2I Identifies Process Options to Reduce a Costly Cleaning Waste for KIK Custom Products

  • Challenge: KIK wanted to evaluate their manufacturing and cleaning activities in an effort to identify potential opportunities for reducing cleaning waste quantities and avoid disposal.

Tompkins Metal Finishing - NYSP2I Performs Water and Chemical Use Assessment of Plating Operations

  • Challenge: Tompkins sought to implement opportunities to reduce process water consumption, reuse and recycle process water that is consumed, and mitigate the severity of chemical contamination of process water.

Crosman Corporation - NYSP2I Performs Water Assessment for Finishing Operations

  • Challenge: Crosman wanted to consider source reduction opportunities to reduce process water use and subsequent wastewater generation.

E.C. Sumereau & Son - NYSP2I Evaluates Wastewater and Hazardous Waste Reduction Opportunities

  • Challenge: Sumereau would like to explore opportunities to reduce the amount of hazardous waste generated along with the costs associated with managing and disposal of the waste.

Costly Hazardous Waste Reduction in Heat Treating Operation

  • The company wanted to identify practical options to reduce the hazardous waste generated from
    the salt bath quench tank cleaning activities.

NYSP2I Performs Acid Control and Recovery Assessment for Control Electropolishing Corporation

  • Challenge: Control Electropolishing sustainability focus is to improve acid use efficiency to reduce acid purchase costs, treatment costs, and hazardous waste quantities.

NYSP2I Performs Ethanol Waste Reduction and Facility Water Assessment for Personal Care Product Manufacturer

  • Challenge: A personal care product manufacture wanted to identify ways to reduce the large quantities of ethanol and water that was used in their process for cleaning manufacturing equipment.

  • Challenge: Determine if Vaccum Cycle Nucleation (VCN) is the environmental & economic alternative to cleaning precision medical devices with Ultrasonic Cleaning.
