Pesticide Training Course Procedural Changes

New York State Pesticide Training Course Procedural Changes

The Department has reviewed the pesticide applicator training course procedures and will be making the following changes effective October 1, 2018.

Course Instructor Credits:

Instructors will be allowed to earn the recertification credits issued for their own certification the first time they offer a course. They will not earn credits for recertification for each subsequent time the course is offered. Instructors will benefit from developing new courses and their students will benefit from new pest management information. Instructors are encouraged to attend training courses from other sources thereby increasing their pest management knowledge.

Course Approval Procedural Changes:

The Department must increase course processing efficiency and ensure courses are conducted in accordance with Department requirements. The following changes will be enacted in an effort to meet that goal.

Courses scheduled for major holidays will not be approved. The Department will consider requests for other holiday course approvals on a case by case basis only. Courses scheduled for weekends will be approved provided the course sponsor has a history full of compliance with course sponsorship requirements and other pesticide laws and regulations.

The Department will no longer routinely award recertification course credits to 30 hour eligibility courses. Eligibility courses are designed as entry level training for individuals new to the pest control industry and may therefore be of less value to currently certified applicators. The department does realize this may affect the viability of some open to the public eligibility training courses and will consider issuing recertification credits on a limited basis.

The Department will reduce the number of out of state courses it will approve. Quite often these programs have no New York certified applicators in attendance. The Department will only approve applications for courses from states bordering NY, states we have reciprocity agreements with, and other major conferences with proven, significant New York State applicator attendance.
