Facility Overview:

The Xerox Webster Campus manufactures multi-function devices, including copiers, printers, and fax machines, along with digital production printing presses. In addition, the facility also manufactures the supplies that go with these systems, such as print cartridges, toner and toner cartridges, and photoreceptors. They also remanufacture older equipment and conduct research and development on site as well.

The facility has demonstrated their commitment to sustainable operations by lowering their overall greenhouse gas emissions. In 2003, Xerox made a public corporate-wide commitment to reduce (GHG) emissions - our carbon footprint - by joining the U.S. EPA Climate Leaders program and launching an internal program known as Energy Challenge 2012.

Energy Challenge 2012 was a 10-year initiative to reduce GHG emissions across all company operations 10 percent by 2012. Xerox met this target six years ahead of schedule, so they set a new target of 25 percent reduction by 2012 (from a 2002 baseline). At the conclusion of the program, Xerox successfully cut emissions by 42 percent - that's 210,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e) - and reduced energy consumption by 31 percent.

Xerox new corporate-wide goal is to reduce energy consumption by 20 percent by 2020 (from a 2012 baseline). In 2014, they reduced energy consumption by 11 percent and cut emissions by 15 percent - that's 41,434 tons of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO2e). They also have achieved zero-landfill status for their Webster Emulsion Aggregation (EA) toner plant, located on the campus.

They have received numerous environmental awards and recognition:

  • Included in the FTSE4Good Index for the 7th consecutive year
  • Included on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index North America
  • Ranked in Corporate Responsibility Magazine's "100 Best Corporate Citizens List"
  • Ranked in FORTUNE's World's Most Admired Companies
  • Ranked in Interbrand's Top 50 Best Global "Green" Brands
  • Received Green Supply Chain Award from Supply & Demand Chain Executive
  • Recognized as a Natural Capital Decoupling Index Leader by The Green Biz Group and Trucost

They currently have a functioning ISO 14001 certified environmental management system in place for the campus.

Sustainability Commitments:

Note: The first two commitments are for all of the campus's operations EXCEPT the toner manufacturing plant. The second two commitments are for the toner manufacturing facility only.

1. Decrease Electricity Usage by 1,690 MWhrs per Year

Xerox will lower their overall electricity usage by optimizing their operating schedules and practices, upgrading their lighting, upgrading their chillers, and instituting a policy of continuous commissioning, whereby they will continually monitor their energy usage and implement changes to lower it as they arise.

2. Decrease Water Usage by 8.53 Million Gallons per Year

The facility will reduce their overall water usage by minimizing the use of once-through cooling and improving maintenance practices to prevent water loss due to aging infrastructure. In addition, they will be installing flow meters throughout the facility to be able to detect leaks and increases in water usage in real time to enable them to identify and fix problems as soon as they arise.

3. Decrease amount of Waste produced in Toner Manufacturing by 0.125 Kg of waste generated per kg of Toner Particle Produced

Xerox will decrease the amount of waste generated from their toner manufacturing process by 20% by evaluating and implementing the treatment of aqueous waste from the process on site, optimizing chemistry in their waste water treatment process to minimize sludge formation, and optimizing the efficiency of their recycling process.

4. Decrease Water Usage by 1.13 Gallons per kg of Toner Particle Produced

The facility will lower their water usage from 11.13 gallons per kg of toner particle produced to 10.0 gallons per kg of toner particle produced. They will achieve this by modifying their dynamic wash recipes to use less water to wash the toner particle and minimize the amount of water used for cleaning and in their cooling towers.
