Get outside and explore Five Rivers! Meet us in front of the visitor center to head out on an adventure. Each week we will have a different theme and explore a new trail. Come for as many sessions as you’d like, and dress for outdoor activity. For children in grades K-5 and their caregivers, but all ages are welcome

Would you like to take a walk in nature, but would rather not go alone?

Join the "Walkers' Club" at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center on Tuesday mornings, 9:30 to 10:30 am.

Participants will gather at the Visitor Center and choose which trail they will walk that morning. This is an opportunity to walk with others and make new friends. These walks are not guided or led by staff. Walkers' Club is a free activity.

NYS DEC will host a public meeting to provide a general overview the federal rules included in a new hazardous waste rulemaking and an in depth discussion of the Hazardous Waste Generator Improvements Rule. These revisions include provisions from several federal rules, including the e-Manifest Rules, Definition of Solid Waste Rule (as amended 2015), Hazardous Waste Generator Improvements Rule, and Hazardous Waste Pharmaceuticals Rule. This public meeting will include a presentation and NYS DEC will be soliciting comment on these potential revisions. You must register for this meeting in order to attend.

Each day begins with the reading of a story from nature. Hands-on activities will follow from the theme of the story and includes exploration, discovery, games, and crafts. Fridays will be spent by and in the stream. Please note the clothing requirements below.

Due to the nature of the activities we ask that only registered children attend.

Fee - One Adult + One Child + Materials Fee:
 Members $45.00, Non Members $60.00, $15.00 for each additional registered child.

Additional Information

How to dress for the programs:

Participants should dress for the out-of-doors. Shoes or sneakers (not sandals) are required footwear. Long pants are suggested to protect against poison ivy and insect bites. A hat is recommended.

Summer Family Fun (ages 2-8):Friday sessions will be spent wading in the stream; old sneakers and shorts are more appropriate for these days. Footwear must be worn in the stream. Water shoes must have a back strap and toes must be covered.

All participants should bring rain gear if the weather looks threatening. You may want to bring a small backpack.

Water:

All participants should bring water. Snacks are encouraged.

A note on insect repellent:

Insects are attracted to strong smelling shampoo, soaps and sweet smelling snacks. Your first line of defense should be the elimination of all strong aromas. Some repellents are extremely toxic. These repellents on hands or skin can be harmful to water critters or other animals you may handle. People with insect repellent on will not be allowed to handle insects or be in the stream.

During this MRAC meeting, public comment will be accepted regarding the Commercial Fisheries Licensing Review. Please review a copy of the New York Marine Fisheries Licensing Report (PDF) that will be a topic of discussion at the meeting.

In August 2019, DEC will host two additional meetings in both Suffolk and Nassau counties for stakeholders to review the report, ask questions, and provide verbal and written comments. Public comments on the report will be accepted through September 30, 2019. Provide written comments by email to FW.Marine@dec.ny.gov with the subject line "GLP Permits," or by mail to Maureen Davidson, NYSDEC, 205 Belle Mead Road, Suite #1, East Setauket, New York 11733.

MRAC meets 6 to 8 times per year. The meetings are open to the public, and members of the public may address the Advisory Council on marine resources issues.

Take part in ongoing research on monarch butterflies. For more than 15 years, data collected at Five Rivers has been contributed to this continent-wide citizen science project conducted through the University of Minnesota. The goal of the MLMP is to better understand how and why monarch populations vary, with a focus on their distribution and abundance during the breeding season in North America. Volunteers in the United States, Canada, and Mexico aid in conserving monarchs and advance understanding of butterfly ecology and migration in general. Wear long pants and bring a sun hat and water. We will meet at the visitor center. Go to www.mlmp.org to learn about the project.

Family Fun:  IT’S EASY BEING GREEN!
 
Do you want to make your home and lifestyle more sustainable, but worry about the difficulty or cost? Let us provide you with some easy (and fun!) ways to be better consumers. There will be several educators from New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, as well as the Museum of Innovation and Science (MiSci), that will present methods for composting, raising insects for us and animals, rain water management, recycling paper, and more!  Designed for ages 12 and up.
