Outdoor Programs for Preschoolers and Their Caregivers

The Friends of Five Rivers is offering programs at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center for preschoolers (ages 2–4). Children must be accompanied by an adult. Adults and children will explore the natural world together for 90 minutes each week during each multi-week session. Each visit features a storybook on a nature topic, followed by an outdoor activity suggested by the book.

Late Fall Session: November and December

WHEN: Each session will take place over 3 weeks. Participants may come either on Tuesday or on Wednesday. (Both days will be identical. Please commit to either Tuesday or Wednesday.) Lessons run from 10:00 to 11:30 am. You may sign up for one or for all four seasonal sessions. Participants will receive an e-mail prior to each week's lesson on the topic that will be explored. The e-mails will be a reminder and a picture clue of that week's adventure.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) is holding a workshop on the hazardous waste rules and revisions that are being considered for adoption, including the United States Environmental Protection Agency regulations promulgated from 2013 to the present.

To help the public understand the draft regulations and regulatory initiatives, ask questions and provide informal comments, NYS DEC will be hosting a public workshop on December 10, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in room PA 129 at 625 Broadway, Albany, NY. Staff will also be available for discussion after the meeting. Those who wish to attend the workshop need to register. Information about the rulemaking and registration details for the workshop are available on the NYS DEC's website under "Outreach Information." If you do not have internet access and would like to attend the workshop, please write to the address below or call (518) 402-8651.

A formal public comment period will be provided at a later date once the regulations are officially proposed. Additional public meetings will also be announced and held in other locations around the state. 

Unofficial written comments regarding this regulatory initiative will be accepted by NYS DEC to the contact listed above.

Would you like to take a walk in nature, but would rather not go alone?

Join the "Walkers' Club" at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center on Tuesday mornings, 9:30 to 10:30 am.

Participants will gather at the Visitor Center and choose which trail they will walk that morning. This is an opportunity to walk with others and make new friends. These walks are not guided or led by staff. Walkers' Club is a free activity.

Final FFY 2020 Intended Use Plans (IUPs) and request for review of projects added since issuance of the Draft IUPs

The New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation (NYS EFC), the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC), and the New York State Department of Health (NYS DOH) have prepared the Final Federal Fiscal Year (FFY) 2020 Intended Use Plans (IUPs) for the Clean Water State Revolving Fund (CWSRF) and the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund (DWSRF). The IUPs include lists of projects that may receive financial assistance between October 1, 2019 and September 30, 2020.

NYS EFC is seeking comments from the public regarding projects that were added to the Annual Project Priority List after publication of the Draft 2020 CWSRF and DWSRF IUPs. This request includes review of these projects for compliance with the New York State Smart Growth Public Infrastructure Policy Act. The list of new CWSRF projects is available on NYS EFC's website at: http://www.efc.ny.gov/2020-CW-IUP, and the list of new DWSRF projects is available on NYS EFC's website at: http://www.efc.ny.gov/2020-drinking-water-iup. Comments must be submitted by 5:00 p.m. Friday, December 13, 2019.

Guided Walk: OLD FIELD TRAIL

Join us on this mostly flat, mile-long stroll on the Old Field and surrounding trails. We will enjoy the cool air and the winter preparations of insects while meandering around ponds, fields, and forests.

This event will be canceled in the event of inclement weather or poor trail conditions.

NOTE: Organized groups (scouts, schools, hiking clubs, etc.) are welcome, but are asked to call Five Rivers at 518-475-0291 to register.
