Would you like to take a walk in nature, but would rather not go alone?

Join the "Walkers' Club" at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center on Tuesday mornings, 9:30 to 10:30 am.

Participants will gather at the Visitor Center and choose which trail they will walk that morning. This is an opportunity to walk with others and make new friends. These walks are not guided or led by staff. Walkers' Club is a free activity.

This meeting is open to the public.

The Shellfish Advisory Council (SAC) was developed as a means of promoting communication between DEC and commercial harvesters, culturists, and shellfish dealers, managers, and other stakeholders on important issues impacting the shellfish industry. Shellfisheries staff provide information on changes in regulations or requirements for the shellfish industry. This also serves as a forum for the shellfish industry to bring issues of concern to DEC for discussion.

Topics being discussed during this meeting include conditional harvesting programs, the Long Island Shellfish Restoration Initiative, Vibrio Control Plan updates, and a summary from the Interstate Shellfish Sanitation Conference (ISSC).

HOMESTEAD CRAFTS

We will be heading outdoors to learn about wildflowers, mushrooms, grasses and trees/nuts that grow at Five Rivers. On our walk, we’ll discuss life cycles, ecosystem niches, and importance or use to homesteaders. We will collect a few samples and head indoors to create a keepsake. Not into crafting? Feel free to leave after the walk. Participants are asked to dress for the weather and bring along water and a snack.

Please meet at Five Rivers’ Guided School Program Building.

Fall 2019 Public Meetings on a New Approach to Inland Trout Stream Management

DEC is developing a new plan for inland trout stream management based on updated scientific information and the desires expressed by trout anglers. Prior to completing the draft plan, DEC fisheries managers would like to meet with trout stream anglers to explain the proposed approach, answer questions, and solicit feedback.

Ten public meetings around the State are scheduled between October 1st and November 12th to facilitate these discussions.

Family Fun: LEECHES—THE REAL VAMPIRES

Lurking in the depths of New York’s ponds, lakes, and streams are bloodsuckers fit for any Halloween tale. Come to Fiver Rivers to learn about leeches, vampires that aren’t restricted to the nighttime. We’ll be giving a presentation about these fascinating creatures, followed by a short hike to one of our ponds in search of these fluid feeders. All ages are welcome.

THE MYSTERIOUS LIVES OF CROWS

Have you ever wondered why you see small groups of crows in summer and large flocks in winter? Did you ever wonder what they eat or what the sounds they are making mean? Learn the answers to these questions and many more while getting up close to one of New York’s most brilliant birds.

This indoor program featuring live crows is designed for teenagers and adults.
